Owls are chiefly nocturnal birds of prey, thus the night owl flying to catch her prey. Because owl symbolism includes wisdom and knowledge I originally created this owl tile for graduation presents for my nieces and nephews. This night owl is flying in front of the full moon.
Pressing a slab of stoneware clay into a mold made from a low relief positive that I have created makes the owl tile. The glazes are applied with a paintbrush and the tile is fired to cone 6. The tile is glazed with various glazes applied in layers the owl is a mottled white gray and tan glaze with a black beak and eyes. The background is purple matte glaze with ocher stars in matte glaze. The moon has black under-glaze detail with semi-clear matte over glaze and the frame is ocher matte glaze. The back has a recessed hanger cut into the clay and a square cork pad in each corner. The actual tile is 3-7/8" x 7-3/4" and the tile weighs about 1.5 pound.
The tile can be hung outdoors in a frost-free location and indoors in humid locations such as kitchen and bathrooms. The tile can be installed after cork pads are removed.
